Jillian Ferrara “Full Circle”

I’m at the top and not at the bottom, I’ve been doing just fine and they know[..]you can’t bring me down,I’ve been down and out…

Thus begins Jillian Ferrara’s latest, mesmerizing single, entitled ‘Full Circle’. A tale of bullying, of overcoming abuse from your peers and coming out stronger on the other side, the song seems extra-powerful to me, as it relates to Ferrara’s own unhappiness. Dealing with constant bullying from her classmates, illness and the abandonment of her father when she was young, Ferrara had a difficult childhood. Until, that is, she found the miracle that is art.

At the young age of ten, she took her first steps as an actress at the local community theater, later finding her way toward dancing and yes, finally, to music.

The point is, Ferrara overcame her struggles and managed to break through and follow her passion, dedicating herself heart and soul to her music. A young lady (she’s only 21 years old, if you can believe it!) that showcases huge potential on every plan – voice, songwriting, dancing, even looks – Ferrara’s more than likely to carve a name for herself in the music business in the years to come, having recently released her debut EP, entitled ‘Intimacy’.

Her hit track, ‘Full Circle’, is definitely a strong break. First, there’s the voice that has an almost haunting aspect to it, soothing as much as it is defiant. Then, there’s the lyrics, which are constructed in just such a way as to send out an important message, while at the same time seeming light-hearted and fun (not to mention memorable).

Then, there’s the dancing, which I must say, only compounds the pleasant, seemingly happy vibe of the song. Demonstrating extraordinary contemporary dance skills, Ferrara asserts herself as strong, drawing a beautiful contrast with the lyrics, which speak of vulnerability. Another aspect of the music video that I really enjoyed was the fact that the girls we see bullying her in some shots are her dance-mates in others, thus combating the image of loneliness that the lyrics and indeed, some shots of the video paint.

Following a smooth, fast-paced flow, the song really gets into you, forcing you to smile despite your troubles, and in the end, that’s what I think it means to do. It asks you that if Ferrara managed to overcome her issues and still make something of herself, then why shouldn’t you?
