Cedar Falls, Iowa artist Michael M Jeni may be known for his Afrobeats sound, but his latest release, “Played,” takes listeners back to where his musical journey began: R&B.
Released in June, “Played” finds Michael stepping away from the upbeat Afrobeats energy his listeners may have come to expect and returning to a more vulnerable side of his artistry. Built around heartbreak, the song gives him an opportunity to express the emotions that come with realizing a relationship may not have been what you thought it was.
For Michael, the shift isn’t necessarily a change in direction. Instead, “Played” feels more like a return home.
Before establishing himself within Afrobeats, Michael M Jeni’s musical journey began with R&B. “Played” gives listeners a glimpse into those roots through a record centered around one of R&B’s most familiar subjects: heartbreak.
Rather than trying to fit an entire project around the emotion, Michael uses one R&B record to tell that part of his story.
And listeners are already finding the song.
Since its June release, “Played” has accumulated more than 1,600 streams, giving Michael another growing record as he prepares for his next release.
For an independent artist continuing to build his audience, those early streams also show that listeners are willing to follow Michael beyond a single genre.
While “Played” reconnects Michael M Jeni with R&B, he isn’t leaving Afrobeats behind.
In fact, another release is already on the way.
Michael is currently preparing to release his highly anticipated new single, “No One Like You,” an Afrobeats record scheduled to arrive in October.
The upcoming song will bring Michael back into the Afrobeats space following the more emotional R&B approach of “Played.”
That movement between the two sounds could become an important part of Michael’s identity as an artist. Instead of being limited to one lane, he can use the emotion and storytelling associated with R&B while still embracing the rhythm and energy that have shaped his Afrobeats music.

With “Played” already crossing the 1,600-stream mark, Michael M Jeni now has an opportunity to carry that momentum directly into his upcoming release.
“No One Like You” represents the next chapter.
The October single will return Michael to Afrobeats and give listeners another side of an artist who isn’t afraid to revisit the sound that started his journey while continuing to develop the music he’s making today.
For now, fans can check out “Played” and hear Michael M Jeni’s R&B side while waiting for “No One Like You” to arrive this October.
From heartbreak to Afrobeats, Michael M Jeni is showing that his story doesn’t have to exist within just one genre.
