“‘Keep on Dragging Me Down’ is about how sometimes you try to help everyone, but people still try to pull you down and how I’ve navigated that in my own life,” Deepwise explains. “As always, I tried to find an angle that would make the song relatable to anyone who has felt held back.”

Rather than allowing that frustration to turn the record into an angry response, Deepwise takes a more reflective route. “Keep on Dragging Me Down” becomes a song about recognizing unhealthy relationships, establishing boundaries and understanding that moving forward can sometimes require leaving certain things behind.

Deepwise Blends Conscious Hip-Hop With Cloud Phonk Influences

The message may be personal, but the production gives “Keep on Dragging Me Down” another layer.

Deepwise drew inspiration from his longtime interest in chill and cloud phonk, having spent years listening to artists and tastemakers such as Ryan Celsius, Soudiere, DJ Yung Vamp and DJ Smokey. He initially wanted to capture some of the hazy, atmospheric qualities associated with that sound.

During the creative process, however, the song began developing its own identity.

The finished record combines an immersive, laid-back atmosphere with jazz-influenced instrumentation, hip-hop production and candid storytelling. Instead of simply recreating the sound that inspired it, Deepwise uses those influences as a foundation for something that feels more connected to his own musical identity.

That combination works particularly well with the song’s subject matter. The relaxed production creates space for Deepwise’s lyrics to take center stage while giving the record an almost introspective quality.

Deepwise’s fingerprints can be found throughout nearly every part of “Keep on Dragging Me Down.”

He handled the songwriting, lyrics, instrumental, production, piano and guitar performances, giving him considerable control over how the record’s message translated into its final sound.

The demos were recorded by Well KraftedMusic, while the finished track was mixed by Kyle Oueis at Hideout Studio in Las Vegas. Mastering was handled by two-time Platinum engineer Nate Middleman.
